My grandfather Alfredo Cimadori died in Flossenbürg on the second of February in 1945 at the age of 60, sadly just a couple of months before its liberation in April. Flossenbürg was a Nazi forced labor camp primarily for political dissidents. Alfredo was not Jewish, he was Italian and was passionately involved in politics most of his life. During Mussolini's rise to power, Alfredo backed him. Things changed when Mussolini allied himself with Hitler. My cousin told me that one night he was sleeping between our grandparents when the Gestapo kicked in the door and dragged Alfredo out into the night. The family never saw him again.
